Checkerbloom - Sidalcea malviflora - Rosanna


DESCRIPTION: Native to Oregon and California.  Belongs to the Malvaceae family. Perennial with semi-evergreen foliage.  Lower leaves rounded to reniform, coarsely lobed.  Upper leaves deeply lobed.  Cup-shaped, pink flowers borne in a spike.

Height: 100 cm (39 in.)

CULTIVATION

Zone: 3-4

Exposition: semi-shaded to sunny location

Soil: rich and well-drained soil

Germination temperature: 5-10ºC(41-50ºF)

Required time: 14-42 days

Special care: Germinate rapidly but irregularly over a long period of time.  Sow outside in early spring or in September-October when the soil is still cool.  Indoor, sow in February-March.  Do not cover the seeds but tightly press them into the earth.  Substrate must be kept constantly moist but not wet.
