Black-Eyed Susan - Rudbeckia hirta - Indian Summer

Description : Native to North America.  Belongs to the Asteraceae family.  Short-lived perennial which reseeds itself abundantly.  Oblong to lanceolate, coarsely toothed leaves covered with short bristles.  Large, daisy-like flowers with golden yellow flowers and a purple brown central cone.

Exposition: semi-shaded to sunny location

Soil: well-drained, ordinary garden soil

Germination temperature: 20ºC (68ºF)

Required time: 10-20 days

Special care: Sow indoors between March 1st and 15th or outdoors from May to July.  Cover with a thin layer of soil.  Keep moist but do not soak.  Once germination has occurred, place in cooler conditions (15ºC/59ºF).  Will bloom the first year even if sown outdoors.
