Spring is here ! (May 13, 2009)
The return of the gardeners to the gardens is as sure a sign of spring to us as the return of the snow geese to the bay at the mouth of the MitisRiver. Between them, our gardeners have more than 100 years of gardening experience, toiling to preserve and develop the gardens that Elsie Reford began more than 80 years ago. In her day, Elsie Reford transformed her fishing guides into gardeners or hired local men to help her prepare the flowerbeds for the plants she had imported from all corners of the world. Together, they built a remarkable garden over more than thirty years.
Today, our gardeners have been trained in several of Quebec’s horticultural colleges – and they complete their training on site – mastering the techniques to make our fragile and rare plants come to life every spring and bloom just in time for the first visitors.
We are gearing up to open the gardens on Saturday, June 6th. It is always a bit of a rush to get ready. Lots of raking, digging, cleaning and planting to do before the first visitors walk through the front gates. The museum exhibits have to be dusted and prepared. Estevan Lodge must be cleaned and polished. But we will be ready and eager to share the first spring bloom for your arrival.
