Gardens | The Gardens | Gentian Walk

The Crabapple Garden leads into the Gentian Walk, the Scree and the millstone. The Gentian Walk was one of Elsie Reford's most ambitious undertakings. The gentians are among the plants that we are patiently re-introducing.

The Gentian Walk is again home to several species of these diminutive alpine plants, among them Gentiana sino-ornata, G. septemfida var. lagodechiana and G. crucciata. Our efforts to obtain her particular favourites, Gentiana farreri and G. x macaulayi var. Wellsii, a hybrid of G. sino-ornata and G. farreri, have to date proved fruitless. But the search goes on.
