Nettoyage à sec

Nettoyage à sec, or dry cleaning, is a veritable car wash for those visitors intrepid enough to adventure along this playful and sensuous pathway punctuated by surprises. The therapeutic, rejuvenating, and purifying tradition of the garden is recalled without losing sight of the need for pleasure, both for body and soul. Without actually being present, water is evoked through the topography and the built forms - allusions to seaside boardwalks, the movement of waves, and the portholes of a ship.

The plants all have particular relationships to water, this most essential of all elements: Spanish moss absorbs moisture from the air, deer-tongue grass and tufted hair grass grow in humid areas, and foxtail barley favours the salt marshes bordering the sea. As visitors make their way along the boardwalk, soap bubbles, a cloud of mist, and other unexpected events mark the visit, reminiscent of the stages in the banal yet exciting experience of sitting in the driver's seat during an automatic car wash.
