Elsie Reford's Alpine Garden was modest. But in it she displayed her favourite alpines, planted around carefully selected stones and in the fine gravel, which is their home. More than 100 rock plants are on display, including rock leek (Androsacea villosa), mountain avens (Dryas octopetala), pinks (Dianthus petraeus) and lewisia (Lewisia cotyledon).
A path meanders through the woods, into a clearing where an old millstone is the main attraction. The area also affords a view of the gardens below. The millstone is a garden unto itself, a testimony to the beauty of simplicity.
